Iowa to update COVID-19 website data, order more Test Iowa kits

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa's expanding the information available on its COVID-19 website.

Coronavirus.Iowa.gov will now include the ages of people hospitalized with the virus.

"These new categories will offer more specific information--not only about hospitalizations, but new cases as well" says Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds.

During a news conference Thursday, she says 72 percent of people in Iowa hospitals with COVID-19 are over the age of 60.

Reynolds also says as demand for COVID-19 testing increases, the state of Iowa is working to make more available through Test Iowa.

She says the state's adding to its contract with the Utah-based company that's supplying the program.

"We have amended it to include the purchase of 360,000 additional sample collection kits for the Test Iowa program" Reynolds says.

She says the state's current supply of Test Iowa kits will run out in the second week of December.

Reynolds says Test Iowa sites can currently handle just over 4,000 tests a day.

The Governor also used Thursday's news conference to push back on news reports that Iowa hospitals are running out of beds as COVID-19 cases increase.

"While hospitals are experiencing sharp increases in patient volume due to the impact of COVID-19, they still are accepting patients. In fact, most hospitals are continuing to provide elective surgeries although some have scaled back to open bed for more patients as needed" she says.

On Thursday, more than 1,200 people were hospitalized in Iowa with COVID-19.
