Iowa House and Senate Democrats Firm Up Leadership After Election Losses

DES MOINES, Iowa - Democrats in the Iowa legislature have leadership in place after disappointing election results for the party in the November 3rd election.

Senator Zach Wahls of Coralville was elected Minority Leader Sunday to replace Janet Peterson of Des Moines, who is retiring from the position.

House Democratic leader Todd Prichard of Charles City remains in place as he was re-elected over the weekend.

Democrats were seeking majority control in the Iowa House, but Republicans ended up expanding their majority instead, to 59 of the 100 seats. Republicans held their 32-18 edge in the Iowa Senate.

Senator Wahls represents District 37 which includes Coralville, western Iowa City and Solon in Johnson County; all of Cedar County; and the city of Wilton in Muscatine County.

He’s 29-years-old and was elected to the Iowa Senate in 2018.

Senate and House Republicans retained their top leaders in elections last week.

The 2021 session of the Iowa Legislature starts January 11th.
