Another Inmate Dead After COVID-19 Outbreak at Iowa Prisons

IOWA CITY, Iowa - There's now a second inmate death at the Anamosa state prison since a COVID-19 outbreak took hold.

A 64-year-old man is dead about a week after a 70-year-old inmate died from the virus.

Almost half the infected inmates were at the Anamosa prison when a systemwide COVID-19 outbreak peaked with nearly 1,400 cases earlier this month.

The outbreak has subsided in the past week.

Sixty-four-year-old Robert Sirovy was pronounced dead from COVID-19 complications Tuesday night after being transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from the Anamosa facility.

Seventy-year-old David Streets was incarcerated at the Anamosa prison before he died from COVID-19 complications earlier in November.

The Anamosa prison is in Jones County, which is the only Iowa county to reach a 14-day coronavirus positivity rate of 50 percent.

The Jones County rate fell to under 40 percent as of Wednesday morning, with the Amamosa prison reporting 260 virus cases at the same time.

A total of three Iowa inmates have died from complications related to COVID-19 in the last week.
