CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Eight-Hundred families have Thanksgiving meals from an eastern Iowa non-profit effort.
The fourth annual "Operation Give Birds" took place at two locations in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Sunday.
The group Iowa Giving Crew is responsible for the giveaway, which started from a prank on Craigslist about free turkeys in 2017.
The number of meals increased by several hundred this year to meet demand after hardships brought on by COVID-19 and the August derecho.
The group was able to give away leftover meals Sunday afternoon. The free uncooked meals consist of a turkey and sides that can feed a family of 4.
