IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Iowa is upholding the suspension of a fraternity that had fought against the move.
The Acacia fraternity claimed its fraternity brothers who made accusations against it were motivated by a desire to be released from expensive lease obligations.
The Gazette reports the school rejected those claims, and instead believed the accusations of high-risk hazing and harassment.
A campus investigation found the fraternity pressured new members to drink so much that some may have needed medical attention after vomiting. The probe also found the members were demeaned for their religious beliefs and racial identities.
Acacia is now suspended from the UI campus for two years, and will then be on two more semesters of probation.
Misconduct accusations against the fraternity have been reported at university campuses around the nation in the past several years.
Acacia was suspended from Purdue University in 2015 resulting from a rape accusation.
