Former Iowa Nurse Accused of Stealing Fentanyl From Clinic

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A former Cedar Rapids nurse is pleading not guilty after being accused of stealing fentanyl from a surgery clinic where she worked.

Federal prosecutors say Sabrina Thalblum covered up her theft by refilling the vials of the powerful pain-killer with another substance.

A earlier settlement agreement with the Iowa Board of Nursing shows Thalblum admitted to diverting the fentanyl from the surgery center and having a substance abuse problem.

She's been released without bond for a trial in February.

Prosecutors say Thalblum diverted the fentanyl by using fine-gauge needles to puncture the vials of the pain-killer and then replace it with a clear substance.

She's accused of continuing the practice for a year between 2018 and 2019.

The Gazette reports that if she's convicted, Thalblum faces up to 14 years on two charges.
