IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa City is one step closer to having a pedestrian mall.
The Gazette reports the City Council's economic development committee has approved the project that's been three years in the making.
It includes the renovation of two city blocks that would be designated as historic landmarks to prevent future demolition.
The full city council will next consider the pedestrian mall project, in which developers are seeking more than $12 million in relaxation of taxes.
The project would include restaurant and bar space as well as a movie theater in second and third floor space.
