Rep. Hinson Signs Letter Calling for Electoral College to be Certified

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Newly elected Iowa Congresswoman Ashley Hinson is staking out a strong position on Wednesday's Electoral College proceeding.

Hinson has signed a letter with 11 fellow Republicans calling for election results to be certified.

It says only states have the authority to appoint electors, and Congress has no authority to influence the outcome of the presidential election.

The letter is in direct opposition to other Republican Senators and House members, who say they'll object to Electoral College results in several states.

On Sunday, Hinson said Congress has a very narrow role in counting votes cast by electors, and earlier said she accepts the Electoral College results.

The vote from the Electoral College found Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump 306 to 232. Many supporters of President Trump think fraud caused him to lose the election.

The letter from Hinson and the 11 other Republicans states that Republicans have relied on the electoral college for nearly all presidential victories in the last generation, after having lost six of the last seven presidential popular votes.

It says disregarding certified electoral votes will delegitimize the very system that led Trump to victory in 2016.
