(Jasper County, IA) -- The Iowa State Patrol's sharing photos of today's huge chain-reaction pile-up on eastbound I-80 in central Iowa. The Patrol says most of the vehicles involved were semis.
At least two Iowa State Patrol vehicles were slammed into and totaled. The troopers were outside their vehicles when the cars were hit and they were not hurt.
The chain-reaction crash in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 started just before noon, west Newton, about 40 miles east of Des Moines. Sergeant Alex Dinkla with the Iowa State Patrol says the road turned into a sheet of ice as a blizzard hit Central Iowa.
Dinkla says many of the vehicles in the crash are commercial trucks. “That’s telling us vehicles are traveling way too fast for the conditions and whenever some incident is happening in front of them, they are traveling too fast and they’re unable to slow down in time,” says Dinkla, “That’s what we see here is the commercial motor vehicle truck traffic just could not get stopped in time and had this chain reaction crash.”
ISP reports there were some serious injuries as well as several minor injuries to drivers and passengers.
