Iowa officer survives, cruiser totaled by crash along I-29 PHOTOS

(Council Bluffs, IA) -- An Iowa Department of Transportation officer survived after a car smashed into the back of her stopped cruiser going highway speeds on I-29.

"We were providing traffic control for DOT, you know the orange trucks, they were working on a patching project." Sergeant Blake Wittrock with the Iowa Department of Transportation tells our newsroom.

"We were providing extra lights, so this doesn't happen when they're out there working" He said. "And, unfortunately, the officer's vehicle was hit from behind."

Wittrock says the officer was treated and released at a local hospital with only minor injuries, but her car is totaled.

Photos posted on social media by the Iowa Department of Transportation show the wreckage from the crash on I-29 near the Missouri border.
