State could strip DMPS Superintendent of administrator license

The Superintendent of the state's largest school district could lose his license due to his district not offering in-person learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Multiple reports say the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners informed Des Moines Superintendent Dr. Thomas Ahart that he was in violation of Iowa law when the district chose to remain 100% online to start the 2020-21 school year.

Legislation was passed last summer that required schools in the state to offer at least 50% in-person learning during the fall, unless granted a waiver.

The Board is giving Ahart two options: Surrender his Professional Administrator License or agree to accept a lesser sanction.

He's scheduled to appear at a hearing in May.
