Report: Midwest States Among the Best in the Country for Opportunity

Several Midwest states are among the top in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report.

The 2021 Best States Rankings are out, and Iowa is at the top of a list of states for opportunity.

"It's ranked number four for the affordability subcategory and it came in at number 12 for the economic opportunity," said Sara Clarke with U.S. News and World Report.

Nebraska is among the top ten for strong education and opportunity.

"Nebraska did very well, both in higher education and in it's pre-k through 12 education. They did well in affordability and also in economic opportunity."

Missouri also ranked near the top for opportunity.

"It did very, very well for affordability. It was ranked number five. Another subcategory that we have within opportunity is the equality subcategory and it ranked within the top ten for that."

Illinois is in the later half of the Best States rankings, but stands near the top for education.

"The reason that the state did so well in education was actually the pre-k through 12 subcategory and it ranked within the top ten there."

Washington was the top ranked state for the second year in a row followed by Minnesota.

The state is ranked among the best in the country.

"Minnesota really did well in a variety of categories; opportunity, infrastructure. All of those just rolled right up, and to give them the number two ranking this year."

Utah, New Hampshire and Idaho follow.

Wisconsin also had a strong overall performance, according to U.S. News' standards.

"Education, economy, those are some that did really really well. I think overall just doing well in a variety of different categories helped Wisconsin do well overall in their ranking."
