Gov. Reynolds to Hold News Conference As More Iowans Scramble for Vaccines

DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds is holding a news conference Wednesday at 11 a.m., where there could be more information on the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines.

The state should have more information on how many new doses are headed to the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program.

Those pharmacies have started vaccinating people under 65 with underlying conditions, while numerous counties have not.

A large group of Iowans in that category have been scrambling to get vaccinated after becoming eligible in the last three days.

Pharmacies in the federal program include Hy-Vee and numerous independent pharmacies across the state.

Polk County, the state's largest county, has delayed opening vaccines to the under 65 group until it reaches a 70 percent vaccination rate for people 65 and older. As of Friday, it was at a 66 percent rate for that group.

Other counties such as Linn and Buchanan counties in eastern Iowa have said logistical and planning issues have led to a delay in their rollout to those under 65 with underlying conditions until Sunday or Monday.

The governor could also have new information at her news conference on verifying underlying conditions.

The New York Times reports 37 states, as well as Washington, D.C., are now allowing some residents with certain health problems to receive vaccines.

It also reports that 16 states do not require a person to prove they have a medical condition.

Some Iowa vaccine providers say they've been given no guidance from the state on whether or how to verify underlying conditions.
