WASHINGTON, DC -- Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is defending an investigation of Iowa's 2nd Congressional District election.
Pelosi appeared on ABC's 'This Week with George Stephanopoulos' Sunday.
She said the process is not unique and noted former conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia agreed the House has the authority to seat members.
Iowa certified Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks slim six votes win over Democrat Rita Hart, which was the closest of any federal race in the 2020 election.
"What the committee did, the House Administration Committee, was very narrow to take the process to the next step and see where it goes from there," said Pelosi to moderator George Stephanopoulos' . "An election of six votes out of 400,000 votes cast."
Republicans claim she's playing politics to overturn the election.
The House Committee on Administration voted last week to delay its decision on Miller-Meeks proposal to a challenge to the election that Hart filed in the House. It's now further investigating the election.
Pelosi allowed Miller-Meeks to be sworn in as a provisional member of Congress in January while the election dispute continued.
Hart's campaign said it found 22 votes that should have been counted during the recount, and claims Hart would have defeated Miller-Meeks had those votes been counted.
Republicans have criticized Hart for going to Congress before turning to state courts to resolve the issue. Hart’s campaign has argued moving through the courts would take too much time to meet a deadline for all votes to be counted.
