DES MOINES, Iowa - Two gun bills are headed to Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds desk after passage in the state Senate Monday.
The bills would let people carry guns without a permit and would place limits on the legal liability of companies that make guns and ammunition.
One bill does away with the requirement for a permit to buy or carry a handgun in public.
Federal background checks would still be required by licensed dealers, but not for private gun sales between people. The bill passed 31-17 on party lines with no Democratic support in the Senate.
The other bill prevents people from suing gun dealers or companies that make guns over criminal use of a gun, or over the gun's design, marketing or sale.
This bill also passed on party lines 31-17, with Democrats saying it would wrongly prevent people from suing over a malfunctioning gun.
Republicans said the bill would prevent frivolous lawsuits. Republicans are also concerned a federal law providing liability protection to gun and ammunition companies will be repealed during the Biden Administration.
Governor Reynolds has not said whether she supports the gun bills headed her way.
