An Ames police officer has been suspended after his arrest early Tuesday morning for allegedly driving at high speeds while driving the wrong direction.
Officer Jason Eaton is facing charges of OWI, eluding, failure to obey a traffic sign, and two counts of excessive speed.
The State Patrol says troopers were alerted to a driver traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 30 near Nevada just before 10:00 p.m. Monday. Eaton was clocked driving 126 miles-per-hour in a 65 miles-per-hour zone.
He later made a U-turn on Highway 30 then merged onto Interstate 35 northbound, where he was clocked driving 131 miles-per-hour in a 70 miles-per-hour zone.
After exiting and stopping for officers, the Patrol says troopers found multiple empty alcohol containers were found in his car. He refused field sobriety tests, but a sample of his blood was taken after a search warrant was obtained.
The Ames Police Department has placed Eaton on administrative leave "pending the outcome of an internal investigation".
