DES MOINES, Iowa - Any parent will be able to certify they've taught their child to drive under a bill just passed by the Iowa House.
The bill would end a requirement for a driver's ed course at a school, online or through a driving school.
Iowa law currently only allows home schooled children to take the state's driving test without completion of a driver's ed class.
Several states, including Nebraska, let any parent certify they're provided driving instruction.
The vote in the House 59-34 Monday evening, with two Democrats joining all Republicans in supporting the bill.
Most states continue to require formal driver's education before kids are allowed to take state driving tests.
The bill passed in the Iowa House was supported by Osceola Republican Representative Joel Fry, who said he taught his four kids how to drive as a home-schooling parent.
The most vocal opposition during floor debate came from Mason City Democratic Representative Sharon Steckman, a former public-school teacher.
