DMFD Hazmat Team Called in During Traffic Stop

(Des Moines, Iowa) -- Two people are in custody after a hazmat team had to be called during a traffic stop in Des Moines Tuesday morning.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says the driver was pulled over in the 2000 block of E. 42nd Street around 8 a.m. for not having any plates on his car, which was later found to be stolen. Deputies say as they were examining the car, they smelled the strong scent of anhydrous ammonia and later found a leaking tank of the dangerous gas inside the car.

The Des Moines Fire Department's Hazmat team was called in, temporarily blocking streets in the area while the gas was neutralized.

Both the driver, 61 year-old William Lane, and the passenger, 50 year-old Helene Latcham, are in custody facing multiple charges.

Anhydrous ammonia is a key component in the manufacturing of methamphetamine.
