IOWA - Doctors in Iowa could soon face criminal charges if they commit fertility fraud.
A bill passed by the legislature deals with fraud in assisted pregnancy, where people later find out their children are not their biological children, or their parents aren’t their biological parents.
There's currently no penalty for unethical fertility practices on the part of doctors and medical staff.
The bill headed to Governor Reynolds carries misdemeanor sex abuse charges and lets victims bring lawsuits.
Tuesday, the House passed a Senate version of the measure, which reduced charges from felony sexual abuse to an aggravated misdemeanor sexual abuse.
The bill passed unanimously, despite some Democratic pushback when the penalties were reduced.
