AMES, Iowa - You'll be able to have a your driver's license on your smart phone in Iowa at some point in the future.
The state hopes to have a pilot program for what will be called "mobile ID" up and running by the end of the year.
Mobile IDs will become more widespread once the International Standards Organization finalizes rules to govern their use.
Once that hurdle is passed, people will then be able to board an airline flight using their phone.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, the process of obtaining a Mobile ID will involve downloading the app, scanning a physical ID and taking a selfie.
Melissa Gillett, Motor Vehicle Division Director with IDOT says mobile ID will offer some special protections and advantages.
People will be able to isolate their information to only reveal information required for a particular transaction - age or address, for example - without revealing anything else.
And updates on mobile IDs, such as address changes, will be done electronically, without a visit to a state office necessary to verify and obtain a new physical ID.
Gillett says the state will continue to issue physical driver's license card when mobile IDs become available.
