IOWA CITY, Iowa - No University of Iowa football coaches took pay cuts in a program the school enacted during financial losses from the pandemic.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports the coaches, including head coach Kirk Ferentz, took their full pay while coaches in other sports took cuts.
The men's and women's basketball coaches and wrestling coaches took voluntary cuts to help the university deal with money problems, as did coaches of sports that were later canceled.
The Gazette reports Ferentz and his wife have donated more than a million dollars to the athletic department in the last several years.
Ferentz is taking his bonus for getting to a bowl game in the last season, although the game never took place because of a COVID-19 outbreak on the opposing team, the University of Missouri.
The assistant IU football coaches did forgo their bowl appearance bonuses. But the Gazette reports the assistant coaches' salaries rose significantly between 2020 and 2021 when to school was enduring financial hardship.
Coaches in four sports that were discontinued because of the university's financial strain took voluntary pay cuts, which were not imposed after it was announced their programs were being shelved.
