IOWA - A Manchester, Iowa man is running across the state in honor of co-workers who died in an escape attempt at a prison.
Ryan Miller works at the Anamosa state prison where an officer and a nurse were killed during the escape attempt in March.
He's running 339 miles from Sioux City to Dubuque in 40 mile stretches and plans to finish on Saturday.
Miller has also raised more than $9,000 for the family of Robert McFarland, the officer who was killed in the escape attempt.
He says McFarland trained him when he first started at Anamosa. “He was an awesome dude,” Miller told KCRG-TV. “Very positive, very good at his job, knew all the policies, procedures, very helpful. He’s a person, that if you had a question, he would take the time to show you to do it the right way.”
Anamosa inmates Thomas Woodard and Michael Dutcher are charged with first degree murder in the deaths of nurse Lorena Schulte and McFarland.
Miller has a website devoted to his run and a GoFundMe page to raise money for McFarland's family.
He's had his run across Iowa planned for several weeks.
