IOWA CITY, Iowa -- It's a day that acknowledges the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned they were free.
For the first time in history, Iowa City is recognizing Juneteenth as an official City holiday.
June 19th, 1865 was more than two years past the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and more than 70 days after the end of the Civil War.
The holiday falls on a Saturday this year, but city offices are closed today.
Juneteenth replaces President's Day as a recognized Iowa City holiday.
The City is hosting events all month long to celebrate.
