(Iowa) -- African Swine Fever is being found in the Western Hemisphere for the first time in over four decades.
Iowa Secretary of State Mike Naig says two locations in the Dominican Republic have reported cases of the virus. Naig says any spread of animal viruses is a concern, but it's important to remember that the agriculture industry moves products all over the world, including places that report cases of the virus.
Naig says the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Border Patrol have stepped up efforts to keep the virus out of the state.
African Swine Fever is harmless to humans but dangerous to swine.
