(Omaha, NE) -- The Omaha Police Department is getting a new helicopter.
The City Council approved the three-million-dollar purchase, which they say is a necessary expense.
The helicopter will be outfitted with a camera, thermal imaging equipment, a mapping system and a spotlight.
For communication purposes, the police helicopter carries the name "Abel 1" when airborne; Funding will come from the Capital Improvement Fund, and it will take a few months for the purchase to be completed.
By contract, the city has to pay around half a million dollars within 10 days of signing the contract.
Payment for the rest of the helicopter will be made over the next 15 years.
