(Des Moines, IA) -- The City of Des Moines is making progress on a stormwater retention project to prevent future flooding for Des Moines' Beaverdale neighborhood.

Flash flooding is a problem in the northwest Des Moines community. In 2018, heavy rain flooded neighborhoods across the metro, leaving some residents with as much as five feet of standing water in their homes.

The project consists of a basin with the potential to hold more than five Olympic-sized swimming pools of water. The basin, near 41st Street and College Avenue, is expected to be finished this year.

The basin would help reduce flash flooding in Beaverdale and other neighborhoods further downstream.
