(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowans are passing a high school equivalency exam at a higher rate than any other state using it.

The HiSET is an exam that allows people that haven't gotten a high school diploma to prove they have the same skills and knowledge as a high school graduate.

The Iowa Department of Education says almost 96% of Iowans who took the HiSET last year passed it, compared to the national average of about 81%.

The HiSET is used in 25 states and four U.S. territories. Iowa has utilized it since 2014.
