Union workers reject Deere contract, negotiations resume

(Undated) -- Negotiations are resuming after members of the UAW voted to reject a new contract with Deere & Company.

90% of union members voted no on the tentative agreement, which covers 10-thousand workers at 12 facilities across Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas. The workers wanted post-retirement healthcare, which the company declined to offer. A UAW Local based in Waterloo says that if there is no deal by Wednesday at midnight, a strike will begin. The last strike was in 1986; it lasted for five months.
