Iowa Attorney General Pledges Focus On Big Tech's Consumer Targeting

(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller says his office is planning to focus on how big technology companies target consumers. Miller released his 2022 priorities for the AG's office today (Thursday), saying he's especially concerned about social media algorithms used to pull in children. Miller also says he's concerned about so-called "dark patterns," related to big tech companies including Amazon, which require consumers to go to great lengths to leave the system.

Miller says in addition, his office plans in 2022, to start asking questions about the large increases in fertilizer and other inputs farmers are facing. Miller says he's not ready to launch a formal investigation yet, but wants to gather more information. He says the Iowa Corn Growers Association had contacted his office to inquire about a possible investigation.

Miller says the priorities are in addition to telemarketing fraud and other consumer protection is sues.

Miller is the newly-elected President of the National Association of Attorneys General. He says as part of that capacity, he's planning a national consumer protection summit, to be held in Des Moines August 8-10th, 2022.
