(Des Moines, IA) -- A second arrest is made in connection with a nearly two-year-old murder that took place in Des Moines’s Drake neighborhood. Catherine Bobbitt was shot and killed near 33rd and Kingman Boulevard in April 2020. In February 2021 a man was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting. On Tuesday police announced they’ve arrested another person in the case. Derrick Smith Jr. is charged with first-degree murder. Police say he was arrested after being shot on Court Avenue over the weekend. Police say evidence shows he’s the person who shot and killed Bobbitt.
