Management says the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium closed its aviary for now after avian influenza showed up in Pottawattamie County.
“There are no suspected cases at the zoo, and we’re working to keep it that way,” a Henry Doorly spokesperson told 6 News.
Dr. Sarah Woodhouse, the zoo’s Director of Animal Health, says the precautions are in place to protect the birds now at the aviary .
Woodhouse said the USDA informed the zoo that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza had killed a non-commercial, backyard flock in Pottawattamie County.

More than 5-million laying hens had to be destroyed.
Iowa is the nation's leading egg producer.
