OMAHA, Nebraska -- The Omaha City Council gets the mayor's budget for the new fiscal year.
"We propose a General Fund budget for 2023 of $474-million, and that's a 3.9 percent increase compared to this year," says Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert.
She says new fiscal year budget won't have any effect on property tax rates.
“The recommended property tax rate for next year will remain unchanged from this year,” Stothert says.
Public safety is getting much of the proposed budget for the 2023 fiscal year.
“We recommend a budget of $178.4 million for the Omaha Police Department--that’s a 4.6 percent increase. For the fire department, we propose an increase of four percent--up to $125.5 million,” Stothert says.
She says says her budget also includes a 10-percent budget increase for the Omaha Public Library to pay for new full- and part-time staff, as well as lease payments and materials for for the downtown library branch at 14th and Jones.
A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for August 16th.
