(Washington D.C.) -- College football fans hoping to see their team play in the college football playoffs will have a more likely chance in the near future.
The College Football Playoff is expanding to a 12-team format. The CFP Board of Managers approved the expansion unanimously on Friday. The 12-teams will be made up of the six highest-ranked conference champions and six at-large bids.
There's no word yet on when the change from 4-teams to 12-teams will happen, but it could be as soon as 2024. The current College Football Playoff's 12-year contract with ESPN expires by the end of the 2025 season, meaning the expansion would occur by the 2026 season at the latest.
Many details regarding the College Football Playoff's expansion are yet to be finalized, such as how the expansion will affect different bowl games, new sites and dates needed, and more.
