On Friday, the Iowa Supreme Court upheld an initial assessed value of Nationwide's properties in Downtown Des Moines, saving the City from having to pay a nearly $1.2 million refund. Nationwide protested the 2017 and 2018 valuation of the buildings by the Polk County Assessor, which had determined them to be worth a combined total of $165.6 million. The Iowa Supreme Court decision overturns an Iowa Court of Appeals decision from earlier this year, which had determined the buildings to only be worth $114.5 million. Nationwide's building at 1200 Locust Street will likely fall off the tax roles in the coming year, as the City of Des Moines voted to purchase that building and its parking garage for just over $40 million back in September.
