(Saint Paul) -- An ICU nurse manager from the Central Iowa VA Health Care System and Minnesota Air National Guard will be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross this weekend.
Major Katie Lunning is only the second nurse ever presented the award.
Earned for her service in 2021 when she helped evacuate and care for patients coming out of Kabul, Afghanistan during active conflict in the final days of the American evacuation from Afghanistan.
Lunning will receive the award Sunday at the 133rd Maintenance Group North Hangar in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Lunning, a Minnesota native, moved to Urbandale in 2019.
