Heartbeat Act to be introduced in Nebraska Legislature

(Lincoln, NE) -- A new abortion ban bill is to be introduced in the Nebraska Legislature.

The 'Nebraska Heartbeat Act,' introduced by Senator Joni Albrecht of Thurston, would ban abortions in the state after a heartbeat is detected, which is usually around six weeks. Current Nebraska law allow for abortions up to 20 weeks. The bill would also require doctors to perform an ultrasound before any abortion.

The bill would not carry any criminal charges for patients getting or doctors performing abortions, but doctors would lose their medical license if they did not perform the ultrasound before an abortion or if they perform an abortion outside of the six week time frame. The proposal does have exceptions for rape, incest and if the mother’s life is in danger.
