(Iowa) -- As temperatures continue fluctuate to start the new year, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reminding the public how to stay safe while ice fishing.
The DNR says ice thickness should be:
- At least 4 inches thick for ice fishing
- At least 5 inches thick for snowmobiles and ATVs
- At least 8-12 inches thick for cars for small pickups
- At least 12-15 inches thick for medium-sized trucks
The DNR recommends staying off of ice 2 inches thick or less, and says people should never go ice fishing alone. Iowans can check ice conditions through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources website.
