(Ames, IA) -- Iowa Department of Transportation crews are finding a wide range of wintry conditions today (Wednesday), from snow in the far northern counties, to a freezing mix of precipitation closer to the I-80 corridor. Director of Winter Operations Craig Bargfrede says depending on the temperatures, crews may need to switch from putting down a brine to using a mix of salt and sand to create some traction for vehicles. He says crews are focusing on northern and east central Iowa, which is under an ice storm warning thru 12 p.m. Thursday. He says it appears many drivers have heeded warnings about weather conditions, as traffic volume is light today. He notes as the storm progresses, travel could become more difficult and may not be recommended.
