(Rock Island, IL) -- The City of Rock Island will soon have automated license plate reader systems in an effort to reduce crime.

Rock Island city council approved the installation of the cameras at entry points to the city.

Pending the permits from the Illinois Department of Transportation, the cameras will help police detect vehicles involved in crime allowing them to respond and investigate.

The same automated license plate reader system is also being used by other cities such as Milan, Silvis, and East Moline.

The Rock Island Police Department will use $120,950 over two years, part of the money is coming from American Rescue Plan Act funds.

The police department hopes the systems will be installed as early as two months.
