(Lincoln, NE) -- The man injured in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement in Lincoln is identified.
The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office says on Monday, members of the Lincoln/Lancaster County Narcotics Task Force were conducting surveillance on a motel room near 27th and West O regarding a separate investigation. LSO says the task force members left their position and proceeded to a parking lot on 28th. The sheriff's office says a Lincoln Police investigator and a Nebraska State Patrol investigator were in one vehicle, while an second NSP investigator was in another vehicle.
LSO says a Chevrolet Impala with New York plates, driven by 35 year old Chace Abney, followed the Task Force members from the motel to the parking lot. Investigators say the officers, who were wearing vests and badges identifying them as law enforcement, exited their vehicle to make contact with Abney. LSO says the officers gave loud verbal commands to Abney exit the vehicle. The sheriff's office says Abney, who is 6'4" tall and weighs 240 pounds, resisted the officers, refused to comply with their commands and pulled a 9mm pistol, pointing it at the officers. Investigators say one round was fired from the gun in Abney's possession. One trooper and the LPD officer returned fire. LSO says first aid was performed by the officers before Abney was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.
Investigators say Abney has Lincoln ties and was in Lincoln for about a week. The pistol he had was reported stolen May 1 in Norfolk. Abney has outstanding warrants from Arizona for Disorderly Conduct with a Firearm and a drug possession warrant out of New York and California.
