(Des Moines, IA) -- The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is monitoring an investigation into University of Iowa athletics, after the baseball team stopped two players from participating in the Iowa-Ohio State series this weekend.

Iowa released the following statement Friday:

"Due to a potential NCAA violation, we withheld some student-athletes from competition. We will have no additional comments as this is an ongoing investigation."

The University of Iowa's baseball team did not specify the athletes withheld from play.

In a statement, the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission said they take "the integrity of gaming in the state seriously and is continuing to monitor the situation and will provide any additional information when able."

The state commission's investigation comes less than a week after Alabama fired its baseball coach, during an investigation into suspicious gambling activity.
