(Grimes, IA) -- The Iowa Department of Transportation is reminding Iowa residents about the Adopt A Highway program.
A social media post last week encouraged more groups to get involved.
The volunteer effort has grown to cover thousands of miles alongside Iowa's roads.
IDOT Maintenance Department manager John Hart says volunteer litter removal has expanded to cover roughly 20% of Iowa's highway shoulders.
Local business manager Matt Hanson and several of his employees were out cleaning Highway 141 in Grimes on Thursday, and say they collected about 16 trash bags worth of litter.
IDOT says it still has trouble spots with litter, particularly at busy off-ramp intersections in major metropolitan areas.
