(Des Moines, IA) -- Work is starting on a new $455 million terminal at the Des Moines International Airport. State and local officials gathered today (Wednesday) for the ceremonial groundbreaking.

Executive Director Kevin Foley says the first phase should be complete by 2026, followed by the demolition of most of the current terminal. Plans call for renovating the 1990s era baggage claim area into office space for airport administration. Construction on the current terminal began in 1948.

Foley says the new building will expand their space by 50-percent.

"The existing terminal is full during our peak periods, we are out of gate room, and so this opens up for hopefully opening up for attracting additional flights," said Foley.

The Des Moines International Airport is the largest in Iowa. Foley says 65% of all passengers in and out of Iowa come through the Des Moines International Airport. Nearly 3 million passengers fly in and out of Des Moines each year.

The new Des Moines International Airport terminal will feature:

  • Expanded central security screening checkpoints with eight screening lanes.
  • Fifteen aircraft gates and additional remote parking positions enhancing opportunities for air service (new routes, new airlines, increased flight frequencies).
  • Updated and more efficient baggage handling systems.
  • Upgraded technologies and infrastructure.
  • Improved sustainability and green technology.
  • Elevated dining and retail options.
  • A new look featuring natural light and compelling airfield views.
