(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa families could miss out on millions of federal dollars earmarked to feed kids during the summer.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the state of Iowa has yet to tell the agency it is interested in continuing to participate in the Summer EBT program. The deadline to do so is January 1st. Around 240,000 Iowa children qualify for a free or reduced lunch EBT card of about $40.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services reversed course this past summer and applied to participate after being lobbied by anti-hunger advocates.
