(Atkins, IA) -- An eastern Iowa city is getting a new fire station four years after the 2020 Derecho destroyed their old one.
The city of Atkins, west of Cedar Rapids, has finally received approval from FEMA to build a replacement station at a cost estimated at 5.5 million dollars.
The collapse of the old station during the Derecho trapped their emergency vehicles, preventing the department from responding in the aftermath of the storm.
