(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- It's about to get tougher for folks in the Wellington Heights neighborhood of Cedar Rapids to get food and medicine. Hy-Vee has confirmed that their store on First Avenue will close for good next month.
State Representative Sami Sheetz tells Iowa's News Now that the closure will create a three-to-four mile radius right in the heart of downtown where people have no access to a grocery store.
He says the decision is a betrayal considering that the city of Cedar Rapids has been providing financial incentives to Hy-Vee to keep the store open for the past twenty years.
Hy-Vee says the store is simply not making enough money to remain open.
The First Avenue Hy-Vee will close June 23rd.
