Stolen SUV With Baby In Backseat Is Found Safe In A Des Moines Parking Lot

(Des Moines, IA) -- A stolen black Mercedes SUV with a baby in a car seat in the back is found safe in the parking lot of Office Max in Des Moines.

Des Moines Police Sergeant Paul Parizek says the SUV with the nine-month-old baby inside was stolen just before 11:00 a.m. from the 2300 block of Ingersoll Avenue.

Police located the SUV a little after 11:30 a.m. in the 2700 block of Ingersoll Avenue after the thief had abandoned it.

No one other than the baby was inside the SUV when it was located.

The mom's cell phone was still in the car and police were able to track the phone and stolen car.

Sgt. Parizek says "We don't believe that the thief had any intention to steal the child, it looked like a crime of opportunity. The car was vulnerable and running and he hopped in and took that."

Police don't have the suspect in custody yet, but say they have some good evidence and are working to track them down.
