Omaha Homicide Suspect Dies

Omaha Police say a suspect in a homicide dies.

Police say they were trying to talk to 41-year-old William Coleman Tuesday afternoon at a home near 36th and Grand Avenue when he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators say Coleman was considered a suspect in the shooting death of 34-year-old Jessica Haley, who was found dead inside her apartment near 46th Street and Redman Avenue early Tuesday morning.

The Omaha Metro Area Fugitive Task Force, along with the Omaha Police Department Homicide Unit, carried out the operation to arrest Coleman.

Detectives identified Coleman's potential location near 36th and Grand.

Police say surveillance was done based on credible information that Coleman was inside the residence.

Law enforcement established a perimeter and prepared for a search warrant.

Officers attempted to communicate with Coleman using a public address system from a marked police cruiser for approximately thirty minutes, urging him to surrender peacefully.

At 2:42 p.m., officers on the scene reported hearing a single gunshot from within the residence.

After entry was made, William Coleman was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

As required by Nebraska statute, this is being investigated as an in-custody death.

The investigation is led by the Omaha Police Department Officer Involved Investigations Team, the Omaha Police Department Homicide Unit, and the Bellevue and La Vista Police Departments.

Under Nebraska law, there will also be a grand jury investigation.
