Iowa Basketball Hall of Famer Dies

(Undated) -- A member of the University of Iowa's "Fabulous Five" men's basketball team has died. All-American Carl Cain died Sunday at the age of 89. Cain played for the Hawkeyes in the 1950s, and led the team to back-to-back Final Fours in 1955 and 1956. The team was the N-C-double-A runner-up in 1956.

During his three seasons as a Hawkeye, Cain helped the program to 56 wins, including 35 Big Ten victories and two Big Ten regular season titles (1955, 1956). The team was the league runner-up in 1954.

Cain was a three-time All-Big Ten honoree, earning first-team honors in 1956, and he was twice named Iowa’s Most Valuable Player (1954, 1956). He finished his career with 1,054 points and 501 rebounds.

Cain was a member of the U-S National Team that won a gold medal, before he was drafted into the N-B-A. Cain is a member of the Iowa Athletics Hall of fame. His number 21 Hawkeye jersey is retired.

Cain was a native of Freeport, Illinois. The funeral is June 15 in Gahana, Ohio, at Schoedinger Margaru Northeast.
