(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa is defending its new immigration law in federal court. The law, passed in April, would make it illegal for a person to be in Iowa if they had been deported in the past or denied admission to the U.S. The Department of Justice lawsuit argues the law violates the federal govenment's right to be the regulators of immigration at the country's borders. Iowa attorneys argue the state's right to file criminal charges does not infringe on the federal government's authority. The law is set to go into effect July 1st, unless the court puts an injunction on it.
